Brass Monkey Half Marathon

Report by Charlotte Carr

6am. Alarm. Snooze. Second alarm. Get up. Eat porridge. Get changed (into new club kit). Quick car drop at my mum and dads before meeting Narni, then we were all good to go.

The day was cold but the heated seats were very warm. We made the trip up the M1 to the start of the race at the Ebor Stadium, York, where the race HQ was situated. We had arrived safely and faced with the question, do we get out of the car and get cold or stay in the car in the warm for awhile longer. We went with the latter and in true Narni style applied glitter to our faces, because if you can’t sparkle when you run, then why run at all?

So off we went, I decided to stay around the 2 hour pacer. 3 miles in, running a little faster than anticipated, I was feeling good. I pushed on, a little faster 5,6,7 the miles markers ticked away as the Brass Monkey unfolded looping southwards away from the race course. Still feeling good I found myself in the middle of a small pack of runner but this was good and carried me. As I approached mile 10 marker I could see the 1 hour 50 minutes pacer in the distance and I thought, I could get to them I knew I had it in me (a 1.50 half marathon time would be a personal best for me). More determined than ever I pushed on. I picked up the pace again, supported by the pack of runners. The race course came back into view, I knew the end was near. Massive shout out to the Marshalls and spectators at this point all offering words of encouragement and praise which were fully taken on board for the final straight.

I pressed stop on my watch as I ran over the finisher line. I had done it, 1 hour 48 minutes. Beaming with delight I found Narni in our designated meeting spot who was equally as beaming to have smashed her half marathon pb with a time of 1:46:46. With finisher T-shirts and Freddos in hand we headed back to the heated seats in the car. Brass Monkey, it has been a delight.
