Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix Race 8, Slaithwaite. (8.75K/268m ascent)
Report by Rachel Howard
What a beautiful day and location. Slaithwaite is a lovely village nestled in the hills of Huddersfield out passed Holmfirth. It was a beautiful day to be sat in the garden with a beer but with temperatures reaching 25 degrees (and because we are veterans, we like a lay in so races normal kick off at 10am) it was going to be a hot one.
The race started with a lap of the cricket field before exiting the village and a 1.5 mile climb up Meal Hill Lane, this was the only road section, apart from a few road crossings. Onto the trails and another gradual climb to the top, where its flat running through field and flowy single track paths. Two descents over fields broken up by a woodland section (this was the only shade we had), back along a open track to the final descent over fields and stiles finishing with a 100 metre sprint finish on the cricket field.
Most of the climbing was on the first hill which was just never ending and brutal in the heat, I’m so glad I took a bottle of water with me. Normally the front running brake away from the pack early doors but I managed to keep the other 5 ladies in front of me in my sight all the way up the hill which I was pleased with. I overtook a couple near the top but kept an F35 lady on shoulder and on the flatter section at the top we kept leap frogging each other. I nearly fell twice, first time was just a slip of the foot into a hole the other was a full-on trip with the left heel clipping the right quad, how I managed to stay up Pilates only knows. She kept me pushing on when my legs were screaming at me to slow down, knowing the downhill section would be coming up also spurred me. The downhill section hit & I was off, I could tell I had put distance between us and I kept hoping I could catch the others but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. As I was stepping over the last stile back into the cricket ground another F45 was right on my heels, where the chuff did she come from! I wasn’t taking any chances and hit the ground running, I don’t think she had anything left in her as she came in at a steady pace. I finished 2nd F45 and 4th overall.
