Barnsley 10k

report by Amy Hutchinson

Relaunched in 2024, Sunday 29th saw 3 runners from Stocksbridge RC brave the scorching midsummer sun to participate in this lovely local race.

Beginning and ending at the Glassworks, the event was superbly organised with the option of picking up race numbers the day before. With race number in place and bag stored there was just enough time for the obligatory toilet stop and a chance to soak up the pre-race atmosphere. A very enthusiastic MC and a banging dance playlist soon had runners and spectators alike in the mood for the 9am start.

A brief jaunt around the town centre then saw us head up Huddersfield Road on an undulating course through Honeywell, Wilthorpe and Redbrook. At the halfway point water stop at Whaley Road it was a delight to see SRC’s very own lovely Jolene Allen handing out much needed water and smiles aplenty- a welcome boost to bolster us for the hillier return leg back into town. A sprint finish alongside Cheapside lined with a buzzing crowd of supporters wrapped this race up nicely before collecting out T-shirts and medals and heading to Wetherspoons for a well-deserved post-race debrief over brunch.

Crowd support throughout the entire course was one of the highlights of this race. Also, huge respect to Barnsley Council who did a great job of organising this event rather than one of the larger race organisers; funds raised stayed local. The race’s charitable partner is Barnsley Hospice and 50 free places were given to boost fundraising.

Thanks for hosting Barnsley- see you next year!
