A misty morning on Sunday 23rd March saw several members of SRC gamely turn out for Run For All’s annual Sheffield Half Marathon. Love or hate it, this race continues to grown in popularity with almost 6500 runners donning their trainers for this popular hilly half.
A prompt 9.30 start and we were off. Starting at Arundel Gate before heading on to Furnival Gate and Charter Row, we were soon on Ecclesall Road. Miles 2-5 are all about the climb; from Hunters Bar to the Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow, in total this race covers over 850 ft of elevation forcing runners to dig deep. Once at the Norfolk Arms, the hard work is mostly done- a quick welcome water and gel stop before a mostly flat and downhill return to the town centre via a quick loop of Dore village. Whilst the fog blocked the usually majestic views offered by the fast, flat Sheephill Road segment, the weather remained mercifully kind- no rain and a perfect, slightly cool temperature.
Seamless organisation and the usual fantastic crowd support we’ve come to expect from wonderful Sheffield locals offering high fives, sweets and encouraging words of wisdom via home made placards. The clubs very own cheerleaders Colin, Victoria and Tara also turned out to show their support- a welcome sight for sore eyes/legs! Oughtibridge Brass Band stationed at Bents Green Church also did a wonderful job of entertaining crowds and runners alike. In all, a fabulous event and a firm favourite on Sheffield’s Spring race calendar.
